Mike and Robyn’s sun-filled Omaha beach house

There’s a natural tranquility to Mike and Robyn’s home, with its sun-filled deck and open plan living area. Located in Omaha, an hour’s drive from Auckland, the newly built home is wrapped in soothing Resene colours to bring a relaxed feel to the interiors that the couple desired.

Outside, cedar weatherboards are finished in Resene stains to give an aged wood hue perfect for the beach side location. Coupled with spouting and downpipes in Ironsand from the Marley Stratus Design Series® range, they love the result.

I’ve had at least five approaches from strangers wanting to know the colours of our home, which is a huge compliment

Robyn talks us through the project, from building challenges to her favourite place to relax in the house.

What part of the house are you most happy with?

We love the open plan of the downstairs area, with the outdoor flow onto numerous hardwood decks. And the polished concrete floors really enhance the wall colours.
We have a covered deck upstairs, an area off the two front bedrooms with sliding shutters and wicker tub chairs, that’s a really nice spot to relax and read a book.

Other than the colour, what drew you to the Marley Stratus Design Series®?

Choosing designer uPVC spouting and downpipes from the Marley Stratus Design Series® range means we have real peace of mind that it will go the distance in our coastal environment. With a 15 year guarantee, it will not rust, is UV resistant and made in New Zealand.

What challenges did you face during this project?

We had our biggest challenge in the initial stages when things were not going as promised and had to project manage ourselves which went very well.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

We kept the colours the same throughout the entire house and followed a beach inspired theme. It works well and we love it.

Mahurangi East

Whilst celebrating their wedding anniversary Karen and Stuart Windross came across an idyllic location in Mahurangi. A few years later they purchased the section, parked up their caravan and never really left until their new home was completed.

Stuart was involved in every step of the build, from concepts and site plans to specifying the materials used throughout the house. Stuart and Karen were eager to use the Marley Stratus Design Series since it was first launched in 2011 and sought it out for this property.

We’ve had Marley spouting and downpipes in our previous home and it lasted us 27 years. If the Stratus Design Series lasts as well here, we will be very happy with that

The Windross family wanted a durable spouting and downpipe system which could stand up against this northern coastal environment, whilst matching the overall aesthetic. As Stuart explains,

We were very conscious we didn’t want anything that would rust or fail, hence the decision to go with Marley.

This labour of love was completed at the end of 2012, with very pleasing results. “There is always the fear of, will we wish we had done some things differently, but as it turns out we are really thrilled with it all“, explained Stuart.

Maraetai, Auckland

Wall to ceiling windows to maximise the sea views and a park across the road, Anne Moors weatherboard house in Maraetai isn’t your typical family home. The Moors purchased this house in 2014, once it had been renovated by their daughter and her husband. This allowed the retired couple to be involved in various renovation decisions, including the choice of spouting and downpipes.

SMS plumbing owner, Shay Spyve and a fellow employee installed the system for Anne in 6 hours, both the upper and lower levels including downpipes.  Having run a plumbing company in a coastal area for many years, he has noticed the ever-changing rainwater market.  Shay acknowledged the tendency homeowners have to lean toward more weather resistant products, “Copper is becoming a less desirable product due to the corrosion factor”. He went on to explain, that the Marley Stratus Design Series fulfilled its mandatory need “with its high flow volume being able to catch and retain the water without it spilling over the edge”.

I thought the Titanium colour from the Stratus Design Series would go really well, and it has proven to fit perfectly with the colours of the house
