The RA80.100 is an adaptor designed to provide a water-tight connection between Marley RP80® 80mm round downpipes and Marley Stormline® 100mm stormwater pipes. The new fitting will be available in all colours from the Marley Stratus Design Series® to ensure a professional colour-matched solution is always achieved.

Historically, the transition between the downpipe and the stormwater pipe has been left open and unsealed with the downpipe simply dropping into an open section of stormwater pipe or into a grate/gully trap. However many councils are now asking for the connection to be sealed on new homes. It is also required for ‘wet’ or ‘charged’ systems where the homeowner is collecting rainwater.

We currently have an adaptor for this transition (724.100.80.90) but it only connects directly to a socketed 100mm pipe or fitting whereas most new house installations now require direct connection to an un-socketed 100mm pipe. Therefore customers currently have to use 2 adaptors to achieve the connection and only one of the adaptors is available in colour making the current solution time-intensive and less desirable from an aesthetic perspective.

Rats, cats and stoats are all formidable foes lowering the odds for kiwi survival in the South Island. But thanks to help from a small army of volunteers and a Canterbury based water solutions company, those odds have just got markedly better.

After 35 years of saving and breeding kiwis largely through the Willowbank Wildlife Centre in Christchurch, the New Zealand Conservation Trust is expanding its work to a new site in Craigeburn.

The trust established a “kiwi crèche” at Willowbank to help hatched kiwis get up to size and develop in a protected ‘wild’ type environment, before being released into the wild proper.

The odds for kiwi in the wild are not good. Trust chairman Richard Moore said 95% of kiwis never make it to breeding age in the wild, and half the eggs laid in the wild won’t even make it to hatching, thanks to predation by stoats, rats and wild cats.

Moore said the time had come to expand facilities, and it has chosen a 4ha site in the Craigeburn Forest Park, replicating the breeding centre and crèche at Willowbank.

“This facility will mirror Willowbank, so in case of a disease outbreak and we have to shut that facility down to deal with it, and Craigeburn is an ideal place with some buildings already there, and an environment that is suitable,” Moore said.

But the Craigeburn region is highly susceptible to fire risk over late spring through to autumn, and a priority has been to get sufficient water supply on hand in case of a fire in the bush area. This had proven a challenge, and the nearest reliable summer water source was the Environment Education Centre, 100m from the buildings.

The Trust was fortunate to have Ken Hagerty, Marley NZ’s South Island manager on its board as an advisory trustee, and he quickly saw a solution to the problem of water supply.

“I could see our Marley Oasis branded Polyethylene pipe was the solution we needed to pipe water to where it needed to be. The benefit for us at Marley was that we got to trial our newest line of water pipe in a pretty demanding environment,” he said.

With temperatures dropping to -10C in winter, and as high at 35C in summer, the extreme range provides an ideal testing ground for the company’s pipe product.

Marley donated the 100m of Marley Oasis pipe to connect the reservoir source to the facilities’ fire-fighting hoses.

 

Over three days in May, twelve young finalists were kept busy participating in the Master Electricians Challenge final (apprentice of the year 2015). They each completed five two-hour competition modules in their respective sector which was either; domestic/commercial or industrial and took part in some great team bonding activities as well. Throughout the challenge, they each utilised recently learned apprenticeship skills – and really pushed themselves to the limit.

Based at Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton, as part of the Waikato Electrical Trade Show, many of the finalists had family and employers visiting and supporting. It was all wrapped up on Thursday evening with a formal dinner to announce and celebrate the winners.

Marley was one of their key sponsors, providing the product and insight for the Marley competition module. This module involved each competitor to carefully select the correct type of conduit when installing cables; underground, above ground and on a rooftop resulting in exposure to UV rays.

24 year old Joseph Morris who is employed by Russells Electrical in Waipukurau and trained by EIT, was the winner of the domestic/commercial category. And 22 year old Rahul Babu, employed and trained by etco* and works for Dalton Electrical Co Ltd in Auckland was the winner of the industrial category.

Our Marley territory manager Stephen Law attended and gave a great presentation on the rules and regulations relating to conduit when it is being installed underground.

It has been a busy time lately in the Contact Centre with the team working toward achieving strong results in the 2014 CRM Awards .

All the hard work has paid off with the team achieving the following awards at the 2014 CRM Awards evening at Skycity Convention Centre.

Ray White Beach Haven, embarked on a community project titled the ‘House of Dreams’. With the help of an interest free loan from BNZ, Ray White purchased a house on Rangatira Road in Beach Haven to renovate with help from local businesses and the community. Marley provided spouting and downpipe from the Marley Stratus Design Series range. The clients chose Titanium as it complemented the classic weatherboard styling of the house

The House of Dreams project was completed and sold at auction on the 21st of September. The house sold for $665,000 raising a total of $145,000 for the Plunket rooms to help improve their facilities and services, nearly triple of the initial goal!

Recently a young woman named Kirsten Newton was challenged by friends to compete in the World of Wearable Arts. She entered a piece in the Man Unleashed section which had to have a 1960s theme, having never been involved with them before.

Kirsten approached Marley NZ and was supplied with short lengths of scrap pipe from the crushing department and created the piece above. What a fantastic job!
