Designed by homeowner and architectural designer Bruce Campbell, the 230m², two-storey home was built with longevity firmly in mind.
Ten years on, that approach has certainly paid off!
Despite its coastal location, the home still looks as good as new – a testament to the considered design and material choices made from the very beginning.
The homeowners had owned the site for many years, sharing it with family and renting out the existing house before eventually deciding to subdivide and build a new home on each section.
After a year-long build, the family now enjoys one of the biggest benefits of their Orewa location – having the beach virtually in their backyard, with shops and local amenities close by too.
Designed with the future in mind
When Bruce designed the home, longevity and low maintenance were high on the priority list.
As a two-storey home, he was keen to avoid the ongoing cost and inconvenience of erecting scaffolding and repainting the exterior every few years.
PALLISIDE® Weatherboards in Slate were selected to deliver the weatherboard look Bruce wanted while providing a practical solution for the long term.
Painted brick was also incorporated on the lower level, while Dynex Soffit in White creates a crisp contrast against the cladding and ties the exterior palette together.
Ten years later, the home is proof that choosing materials with the future in mind can pay dividends – still looking fresh, contemporary and remarkably well cared for.
The finishing touch: Marley Typhoon® in White
With the home located so close to the coast, choosing the right rainwater system was another important consideration.
Bruce selected Marley Typhoon® Spouting and RP80® Downpipes in White – a combination that provides a clean, classic finish against the Slate weatherboards and White soffit.
The decision was both practical and aesthetic.
They won’t rust, I wanted white and I liked the look of the external brackets.
The bold, half-round profile of Typhoon® gives the roofline a strong, defined finish, while the external brackets add to the character of the home.
Matching RP80® Downpipes continue the clean white detailing down the exterior, creating a cohesive finish that has stood the test of time.
A home made for the Hibiscus Coast
The surrounding environment played an important role in the choices made throughout the build. Coastal, hardy planting was selected for the property, although the salt-laden environment has meant some plants have needed replacing over time.
It’s a reminder that life close to the beach brings plenty of benefits – but also places particular demands on the materials chosen for a home.
