Colin and Wendy find purity in white
When Colin and Wendy planned a house to replace their old 1950s Mangawhai Heads bach, they had a very clear vision from the outset. The new house would be pure white. Or Resene Black White, to be precise. Crisp, elegant and beautifully detailed, the house borrowed architectural references from both the coastal homes of the Mediterranean, as well as classic New Zealand houses. With its large eaves, gabled form, verandahs, and corrugated iron roof, the house sits perched in a stunning location looking out over the estuary, sand dunes and ocean.
The only colour on the exterior is a flash of lime green on the front door, in Resene Wellywood. The window joinery is white; even the spouting and downpipes are a Kiwi favourite – Marley Typhoon® spouting and Marley RP80® downpipes in white.
The couple’s love of white continues inside, the walls and ceilings painted in Resene Half Black White. Much of the furniture is black and the colour accents in the décor are lime green, orange and aqua.
One room of the house where colour is celebrated – the owner’s purpose-designed art studio. See www.wendyleach.com for more information.
How did the build go and what where the challenges?
It was quite a technical build as the house has essentially been built on a sand dune. The retaining walls and piles involved some serious engineering. We had to consider the coastal environment too, so choosing exterior components like the white spouting which won’t corrode or degrade from the salt air, was important. It also has a profile that’s clean-lined so suits the house. We also used Resene X-200 on the offset concrete block cladding, which is a thick paint known for its protective and water-proofing qualities.
What part of the house are you most happy with and why?
We love the whole package but we are particularly pleased with:
- The view right through the house from the pool out to sea. Also from the front door through the house out to sea.
- The white kitchen, which has a five-metre island bench and a scullery. The splashback features Wendy’s painting ‘Kuaotunu’ printed on the back of the glass. It is dynamic and monochromatic.
- The bathrooms, and the master ensuite in particular which we designed with two quite separate vanities.
- The vaulted ceilings in the main upstairs living area, master bedroom and Wendy’s studio which also features internal and external floor-to-ceiling windows.

What is your advice for somebody trying to achieve a similar look?
Have a comprehensive vision of what you want. Don’t compromise. Collaborate with the right design and trades people. Understand the cost and time drivers of the project to ensure you enjoy the build and to avoid any surprises or disappointments. We worked in collaboration with architectural designer, Martin Harnish, from Warkworth, on the design elements of the structure.

This apartment / townhouse complex in Normanby Road, Auckland has recently benefited from an extensive $10 million makeover, including a stylish exterior reclad, new roof, spouting and downpipes.

A Balinese paradise
As you walk down the driveway at Jackie and Bevan’s home, the zen-like surroundings give you an instant feeling of calmness.
Having lived in Greenhithe for seven years, Jackie and her family knew it was the place they wanted to be. When they found their dream home for sale, with land for the children to play and a gorgeous view of the water, they jumped at it.
The family instantly fell in love with the Balinese style, the secluded nature of the property and the sprawling decks.
The layout of the house is spacious and modern with generous windows so you’re continually taking in the mature tropical gardens. The parquet flooring is a bold design statement that works incredibly well.
The roof is corrugated iron painted in Ironsand, one of New Zealand’s favourite roofing colours. This made picking Ironsand spouting and downpipes from the Marley Stratus Design Series® the obvious choice. Jackie chose the Typhoon® spouting as this half round profile can cope with the larger roof area and heavier rainfall. The external brackets make it easy for cleaning out leaves and debris, whilst complimenting the unique Balinese style columns.
Water has been used throughout the grounds for a tranquil resort feel. A goldfish filled stream meanders below the imposing entrance way and a heated swimming pool has recently been installed – certainly a winner for the family next summer.
Balinese style homes fit so well with the way we live in New Zealand. They are incredibly versatile with maximum indoor-outdoor flow for the summer months and an equally warm, cosy feel for the winter. As displayed so well on this home, the Marley Stratus Design Series® can help bring any Balinese beauty to life.

Impressive, imposing, angular
Three words to describe David & Caroline’s gorgeous new home in Epsom, Auckland. The build has been a lifetime dream for the couple so the first night in felt truly amazing!
Marine cladding was chosen for the exterior with a specific batten pattern to give the house a more structured and styled look. Painted in Resene Double Cod Grey, the impact is bold and modern. The eaves in Resene Triple Sea Fog, and pagodas in Resene Gull Grey nicely compliment the strong cladding colour.
Having Grey Friars roofing and joinery, made picking the spouting a simple decision to compliment the overall colour scheme.
The Marley Stratus Design Series® in Grey Friars finishes off the well-designed exterior perfectly. By using the Typhoon® profile with external brackets, it gives the house a more traditional look whilst allowing for easy cleaning and maintenance. With a 15 year guarantee, it will not rust, is UV resistant and made in New Zealand.
The interior of the large 350m2 home is light and modern with walls in Resene Double Merino and ceilings in Resene Alabaster. Feature walls are Resene Half Masala. Flooring in American Oak wide boards with a natural polyurethane coat complete the look.
The Marley Stratus Design Series® is offered in both Typhoon® and Stormcloud® spouting and RP80® 80mm round downpipe , in a range of colour options (Metallic Range: Copper and Titanium or the popular roof colours Grey Friars and Ironsand). For this project, David and Caroline utilised Typhoon spouting with the external brackets in the Grey Friars finish.
Caroline gives us some further insight into this exciting project:
How long did the build take?
The actual build took 12 months, 9 months for resource consent and design. The total project took two years from start to finish.
What challenges did you face during the build process?
The hardest part was going through resource consent, because this was a heritage site. The house on the section was 1920s so anything from earlier than 1930 is protected. Parts of the original house i.e Front door, windows etc. were given to sons to be reused in their home renovations.
What part of the house are you most happy with?
The whole layout of the house works, there isn’t anything we would change. We did so much research into the layout. The top house is a family unit, the middle level is a working family zone with a spare bedroom for guests and the bottom could be an office for those who want to work from home. It’s a multi-functional house. It’s too expensive today to do a new build that just works for you.
What is your advice for somebody trying to achieve a similar look?
If you change your mind a lot, it will cost you. Do your research, make informed decisions and stick to them! Get independent advice and get an overall idea of how it all comes together, then when you chat with you designers and trades people you already have a strong plan of what you want.
